So Ike reared it's ugly head our way... and boy did it do a number on the eastern coast of Texas. We, thankfully only had one casualty - our baby tree in front of our house (oh and a few missing boards on our back fence) The tree just needs some good support and then it's will begin to heal and grow to be a great shade tree!
So here's the recap:
My Mother in Law (MIL) and Brother in Law (BIL) evacuated their house on the east end (about 45 miles from Galveston, where the storm surge was going to hit) to come to house which is about 95 miles from Galveston. The storm started hitting us around 11:30 pm on Friday night and it was just strong winds.. nothing to be scared about. So we headed up stairs to go to bed and at 3:30am Sat., we started to get flickering power. At 4:00 am - power gone... and the full fledge storm coming through! Let me tell you, I was a scardy cat! super scardy! I kept waking hubby up telling him that we needed to go downstairs and 'hunker down' - He then proceeded in his sleepiness to give me statistics and details about how our windows are 120 mph grade blah blah and how we live in the 100 yr flood plane, blah blah... I told him that if he wanted to lay there and chill out, fine, I on the other hand WAS NOT. So I head out of our room to the hall ready to go down the stairs when my MIL comes and says 'oh thank God that you are going downstairs. I was going to go but was too scared to go by myself'
So there we are, walking down the stair and hubby decides that he does not want to be by himself upstairs and makes his way down with us. As we near the bottom of the stairs, we find that there is a small puddle of water coming from the back door. Hubby runs into action and starts putting towels to dry up the water. My MIL and I head over to the area between the dinin room and the living room (kind of a small hallway) and just sat there on the floor watching a small battery powered tv that I had. So we are sitting there and then all of the sudden a loud HORN blows and we freak out. It was the strong (95-100mph) winds that were hitting the back door and seeping through the making the noise. I was sooo scared that the back door was going to bust open and the winds and rain and whatever else was flying out there was gonna come intot the house. It was seriously a scary 3 to 4 hrs. It finally started dying down at around 8 am and boy was I thankful! ... with my hubby laying on the floor in front of the couch, BIL upstairs with his cat in his room, MIL laying on the floor behind the couch and me laying on the couch we all knocked out for about 3 or 4 hrs... once the heat started getting to us and we could no longer stand being asleep, we all woke up to find a window to look out of.
So there was the start of our 4 days without power. We did whatever we could during the day 0- read, color with crayons (ha!), cook, eat, etc. We had the windows open the whole time. We enjoyed the laziness of the day.
We finally got our lights back on Tues (Sept 16th) at around 3:30 am (or that's the time that I noticed, because I woke up to a glow of street lamps!)
All in all, we have been super de duperly blessed with good fortune and only slight damage to our house. It was quite nerve wrecking and I think had we been in the apt, I know we would not have had such good luck!
Praise!
Adriana
